It's been a month now since I started my new routine as a student (again). It's been 4 years since my bachelor graduation. I forgot that being a student means there's homework & school assignments and it's like a LOT! The first week I was shocked, trying to adapt with the new situation. But now, I (hopefully) can manage it even if that means I have to spend my weekend finishing the assignments. Another changes in my life is, I now live alone in a small apartment. Do all the house chores alone, I thought I can't do that. But it turned out fine :) I have choose this then I have to finish it! and by the way, I love my new life :)

Happy Ied Mubarak guys! How was your lebaran? I never go mudik since I don't have any kampung. :p I always go to Jakarta for lebaran. After all the celebration I decided to have a picnic with my friends at Bogor Botanical Garden before all the routines start on Monday. It was a nice sunny Saturday. We came in the morning, so the garden is still not crowded. I think I should do this thing more often :)

The problem in Indonesia is we don't have open public spaces to go picnic or just sitting in the park. If there's an open park, most likely it's dirty :( Luckily Bogor has Botanical Garden. Although there's an entrance fee, but it's nice.

I found an old but interesting documentary movie about globalization in Indonesia called 'The New Rulers of the World'. John Pilger, the man behind this documentary film, examine the true effects of globalization. The film examines the use of sweatshop factories by famous brand names, and asks some penetrating questions. Who are the real beneficiaries of the globalized economy? Who really rules the world now? Is it governments or a handful of huge companies? The documentary was made in 2001, but now, 10 years later, it still remains the same I guess.

I don't know what has gotten into me recently but whatever it is, it's a good thing. My ~~passion~~ for cooking has slightly rise above. Yesterday I challenged myself to make Macaroons. Macaroon or Macaron (in French) is sweet confectionery made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powderor ground almond, and food coloring with butter-cream filling between the two cookies.

Result: the macaroon taste like macaroon but with a ~~slighty~~ different form. Yeah it's a swollen macaroon! :)) It looked more like schuimpjes rather than macaroon. I was looking at the Youtube video and wondering, how come they can do a perfect circle for every macaroon?! But well, it's my first attempt. I'll try again!

This is the recipe I use:

Ingredients

175g icing sugar
125g ground almonds
3 large free-range egg whites
75g caster sugar

For the filling

150g butter, softened
75g icing sugar

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan140°C/gas 3. Whizz the icing sugar and ground almonds in a food processor to a very fine mixture, then sift into a bowl.
2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt to soft peaks, then gradually whisk in the caster sugar until thick and glossy. (At this point you can stir in flavour extract, such as peppermint or lemon, and corresponding colouring such as blue or yellow, to your meringue mixture, depending on what kind of macaroons you want – see chef's tip. Or divide the meringue among different bowls if you want to make more than one colour.)
3. Fold half the almond and icing sugar mixture into the meringue and mix well. Add the remaining half, making sure you use a spatula to cut and fold the mixture until it is shiny and has a thick, ribbon-like consistency as it falls from the spatula. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain nozzle.
4. Line 2 baking sheets with baking paper. Pipe small rounds of the macaroon mixture, about 3cm across, onto the baking sheets. Give the baking sheets a sharp tap on the work surface to ensure a good ‘foot’. Leave to stand at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to form a slight skin. This is important – you should be able to touch them lightly without any mixture sticking to your finger. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool.
5. Meanwhile, make the filling/s (unless making chocolate macaroons – see chef's tip). In a bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy, then beat in the icing sugar. (You can now add flavouring or nuts, and colour – see chef's tip.) Use to sandwich pairs of macaroons together.

Per macaroon: 160kcals, 9.7g fat (4.2g saturated), 1.8g protein, 17.5g carbs, 16.4g sugar, 0.2g salt

Chef's tip

Macaroons taste wonderful plain, but why not add flavouring and colouring? Flavour extracts – such as raspberry, lemon and peppermint – and colourings are available in supermarkets and cake shops. Try squires-shop.com to buy online. To flavour and colour your macaroons, in step 2, add around ½ tsp flavour extract, then add the appropriate colouring, a drop at a time, until you reach the desired intensity. Flavour and colour the buttercream in the same way. For chocolate macaroons, replace a quarter of the icing sugar with cocoa powder and use Nutella as the filling. For pistachio macaroons, replace half the ground almonds with ground pistachios (whizz in a blender or finely chop by hand), and use green food colouring to achieve a pastel green. Fold chopped pistachios through the filling, if you like.

I was randomly changing the TV channel when I found somebody making desserts. It was late night and I was hungry. Perfect! But I kept on watching the program until he finished. He was making 'Ile Flottante' or Floating Island. Cooking is not actually my thing, but it looks simple. So why not give it a try ;)

Result: it's good! hahaha.... I gave one spoon of Kahlua for stronger taste :)

You can find lots of ile flottante recipe in the internet. This ile flottante recipe is the one I use (~~read: the simplest~~).

Yesterday I was featured on Burdastyle as a Project member of the week. It was my first time featured, I'm soooo happy!

This is a simple A line dress I made from Mega Mendung fabric. This is a batik pattern from Cirebon, Indonesia. Mega Mendung literally means the Big Clouds, the cloud that brings rain symbolizes fertility and prosperity.

I had this fabric for a long. As an amateur seamstress I was afraid that it will failed. But then it turned our just the way I imagine. I cut the fabric in bias just to make it different.

Having lived in the city makes me fed up with the traffic and pollution. So last Sunday I went to Puncak, just about 30 minutes from Bogor, to have a little walk along the tea plantation. I went there with my Couch Surfing friends.

All you can see is green plants and blue sky. It felt really nice to breath the fresh air.

Yes, i want to tell you about my trip to Vietnam. Well I've been planning for this trip since early 2010. I wanted to go to all 3 countries, Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia, but my holiday leave was not enough. So I decided to go to Vietnam only, and since I only got 5 days, I choose Hanoi over Ho Chi Minh. It's because I wanted to go to Halong Bay. Yes, that was my main point! :)

Hanoi Backpackers Gecko3 Dorm

Tickets & itinerary done. And so it was time for me and Uthie, my partner in crime, to start our wonderful journey. We took AirAsia's last flight to LCCT, Malaysia. Stayed in the airport to catch the first flight to Hanoi. We arrived in Noi Bai International Airport at 8 AM. We haven't had any sleep since the day before and we still have a 1 hour ride to the city. We took the Vietnam Air shuttle to the Old Quarter, for $2/ person. The shuttle is just outside the arrival terminal. Since their English isn't really good, I have to asked some people that are already in the shuttle to make sure.

We didn't made any hostel reservations yet, but already bookmarked some choices in the Old Quarter. When we got out of the shuttle, that was literally where my journey started. Motorcycles are already welcoming us. Trust me, within a day in Hanoi you will be an expert of crossing the street full of motorcycles! With a map from Lonely Planet, we are ready! The map says the hostel was 18 minutes walk from the shuttle shelter, but as we were lost in direction we found it after 40 minutes of walk...lol. So we found our first hostel, but turned out the price are to high for us. We walked out and found a $6/ night dorm next to the place. And we stayed there. :) Gecko 3 Backpackers Hostel in Bat Dan St., Hoan Kiem District. They also sell the Halong tour, we bought ours for $29/ 2D1N including food. Tip before buying a package tour, make sure you already done some research and haggle. Some people in our boat paid for $25 while other paid $60. :D

While in Vietnam, I didn't found any food that I don't like. They're all good!! I still can remember how the spring roll tastes. Having eaten Vietnamese food in Vietnam, I now can tell Vietnamese food in Indonesia is such a far cry. Pho bo, fish noodle, spring roll, hot vin lon, name it. I bowl of Pho Bo cost 20.000 VND, Vietnamese coffee 15.000 VND. Some locals paid for our coffee after having some conversations. Ha Noi Beer is the best! What makes it more tasty was I always got it for free! hahaha.... Free beer everyday :D Vietnamese delicacy, checked!

On the second day, we went to Halong Bay. We are picked up at the hostel at 8 AM, picked up some other guests, and it took 3 hours of non-stop honking shuttle to Halong City. The Vietnamese loves to honk! Planning to have a good rest along the way? Well, just try. :)) We arrive at Halong City at 12 PM, the ~~so-called~~ tour guide collected our passport and we are waiting to get on board. Since I paid for the cheapest boat, I wasn't expecting much of what will the boat look like. And when the boat docked, it was okay,,,hahaha,,, The food was okay, electricity is not on after 7 PM, the bed is okay, the tour guide barely speaks English but was so confident :)), yeah we got what we pay. No problem, I was there because of the view and for bonus I got new friends from Spain, Russia, Vietnam, England, Australia, etc. :D I got my first kayaking experience :D Swimming (minus jumping off of the boat, I chose using the ladder :p) in Halong Bay, checked!

I was lucky ~~NOT~~ to be part of Hanoi's 1000th anniversary. Lots of celebration, festivals, and ~~people~~. Yeah people, they're like everywhere and it was kinda too packed. Every time I wanted to take a picture of something, there's people heads in it...LOL Temple of Literature, the first university in Hanoi, I was picturing it as a comfort and peaceful place, then when I arrived it was full of people. HCM Mausoleum, HCM museum, One Pillar Pagoda, Lenin Park, packed also. I think it was a great time for the locals, but not to great for the travelers. :D Happy bday anyway to Hanoi! Such a great people you have! Didn't get a chance to visit Sapa, but surely want to go there!!

You just need an unused fabric, needle, and threads.

Challenging at first, but once you got the pattern it's really quite easy :)

I also wore it as a head band. Just need to clip both ends to your hair.

Batik tradition in the Sundanese has been going on for long. In some area such as Cirebon, Tasikmalaya, and Garut, these tradition has create an exclusive motives that became the area specials. Batik Garutan is one type of batik that is produce in Garut, West Java, Indonesia. Batik Garutan motives developed from social environment influence culture, philosophy of life, and customs of the Sundanese.

The Garutan motives usually are decorative flat lines or geometric, aslo flora and fauna. This batik is identified by the it's special colors of gumading (yellowish ivory), indigo, dark red, dark green, yellowish brown, and purple. Batik Garut colors is lighter and brighter than Javanese or Surakarta Batik. Having this brighter color makes it more fashionable to wear.

Batik Garutan has been a souvenir since the Dutch colonization. In the book, 'Garoet, En Omstreken' (1922), it is written that batik is a souvenirs that Dutch tourist bring from Garut.

Well, you can find all those stuff in Sagoo Kicthen restaurant now. It's a restaurant which is designed with atmosphere so that you feel you're back in the days.You can feel it just from the minute you enter the restaurant. From the cutlery, furniture, and design. They even use the old spelling on the menu. The food is good, not so expensive, but the sweets & snacks are kinda overprice. But if since it'snow rarely to find so it's okay. My favorite is Beehoon siram and Ovaltine Dinosaurs. So if you wanna get nostalgic with your childhood time, go to Sagoo Kitchen. In Bogor it's located in Botani Square GF

Nikon 50 mm f/1.4

I'm searching for a wide aperture lens and this lens fits my budget. I love the bokeh that created from wide aperture lens. Ken Rockwell said this lens is a secret weapon for low-light photography. And it's very great to capture portrait and people.

I already have a 50 mm f/1.8 lens and quite satisfied with it. But reading others review about the f/1.4 and seeing at the result makes me want to have it too. :)) Beside I already got someone's to buy my f/1.8 lens. Can't wait for the package to arrive!

Just got back from Malaysia last Wednesday. I attended the Youth Engagement Summit 2009 (YES2009). How did I get there in the first place? Lucky I guess…

As simple as answering Air Asia question on if you could change one thing in your lifetime, what would it be, and who will it be for? Yourself, your community, or your country? And how will you contribute to it?

I answered: 1thing I'd like to change is to make people to stop litter. So the environment will be a healthier & comfortable place to live in.

Submit it on Thursday, then on Friday I got to know that I was one of the 30 lucky winners! Yeay! Thanks Air Asia! Though they don’t provide transportation & accommodation, I still want to go there. So I booked the cheapest flight (It’s Air Asia for sure :D) and stayed at my friend’s house there.

So I arrived Sunday (15/11) in LCCT at 11.30 am and not long after that my friend, Natasha and her friend, Hanum, pick me up. Natasha is my childhood friend back when I was living in Sydney. We went to Natasha’s family house in Taman Kencana. There I met Auntie Jo and Uncle Wan. We didn’t stay long there. We then drove to Sungei Wang and Bukit Bintang to have lunch and window shopping. I didn’t bought anything there..quite a surprise :D. I fell in love in a Vincci shoes but they didn’t have the number. Too bad Around 5 we went back to Taman Kencana, have some snacks and drove back to Natasha’s house at Seri Kembangan.

The YES2009 took place in Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) in Putrajaya. Luckily it’s near Tasha’s house. Hanum drove me to PICC on Monday (16/11) morning; I went to Air Asia booth for registration and waited for the gate to be open. It was supposed to start at 9.00 am, but in fact starts at 10.30 am. Here’s my resume of the speakers in the 2 day summit:

* Lorraine Hahn – former CNN and CNBC presenter

She was the MC for the 2 day summit. She’s a very clever lady indeed. In the opening speech she said, “Its youth who build the future, not future build the youth.

* Biz Stone – co-founder of Twitter

So he’s cute. LOL. Who doesn’t know twitter? I love the way he made his speech. He made the audience listen to him.

Many people think Twitter is an overnight success, but actually it’s a 10 years worth of work. His team actually planning on creating something bigger than Twitter. Then the idea of Twitter came out when there’s some flood in his house, he’s busy cleaning the mess and suddenly his friend texted him saying, ‘Sipping wine in the lake. So relaxed.’ And he’s like WTF? I’m busy here and you’re like relaxing on the lake? So Twitter was born.

One tweet can change a lot of people. Open exchange information (not just Twitter) can send positives global impact. Tiny information can be such a useful info. Why Twitter only can write 140 characters? Because a text messages is 160 characters and they leave 20 characters for names.

‘Twitter is about the triumph of humanity, not the triumph of technology’

Being the youth and eager to success we mustn’t be afraid of failing. Biz said happy mistake are the best kind and creativity is a renewable resource.

* Dr. Mamphela Ramphelle – former managing director of The World Bank

She is surely one of a genius woman. She’s from South Africa, in her youth time there is no many choice for black people. Even in their own country. Both of her parents is a teacher, but she wanted to be a doctor, but don’t know where to go. No one go to college at that time. But with effort and hard work she made it.

She talks about ethical engagement, political conflicts, gender stereotypes, inequality. Talks about Nelson Mandela engaged people to fight apartheid, how Mahatma Gandhi paid the change by his own life, Martin Luther King; the assassin’s bullet that kills him never kills his dream, Obama believe youth can change what’s happening.

Her advice for the youth is use all the opportunity that you got.

* Narain Karthikeyan – F1 driver from India

Supposed is Amitabh Bachchan sitting in this summit. But for some reason he cancelled it..too bad. I wanted to meet him. But c’est la vie. Narain is cute though…LOL

When Hahn asked Narain why F1? He simply answers when you’re young, brave, stupid just catch your dream. Stupidity helps He learns to drive by driving tractors in the rice field. It’s not an instant success. He encourages youth to never give up, when there’s a will there’s a way. If you start something finish it. Plan your strategies.

* Bob Geldof – founder of Live Aid and Live8

Lookin’ good Sir! I'm in love with him. I always have something with rebel and mature (not to say old ) looking man. He comes out on stage wearing a sleek grey suit. Didn’t expect that from him..LOL

Anw he starts his speech by talking about his childhood. His father sells towel from house to house, his mother died when he was 6, his first sister didn’t wanted to take care of the family so she married and get out of the house, and his other sister was the type of women who don’t stop studying. So no one actually took care of little Geldof. There was only radio. He listens to the radio every single day, and gets to know rock music. Why is rock music so universal? Rock band is an accurate example of the real life. From rock bands he knows about Africa, that was when he was 13 years old. He didn’t get to college, he didn’t want to and he cannot go, because of his marks. So he travels the world, gets some money, and got back to Ireland and formed a band, The Boomtown Rats. It became a hit!

‘Nobody is less than another. Everybody is equal
if they got the equal opportunity.’

He also set an anti-Apartheid move in Ireland. He recognized there’s only 8 mile difference from the richest (Europe) and the poorest (Africa). We must get something to do with this and he did it through music.

The common language of the world is not English, it’s Pop Music.

Politic and economic is the structure of poverty. He said, ‘It’s not my generation who feels the impact, it’s yours.’ One’s country can’t solve the problem alone. We as an ASEAN country should get together and solve this problem. As Gandhi once said, ‘If you want to change, be the change!’

* Garry Kasparov – Russian living legend of chess

My favorite speaker in the summit! Didn’t expect he would give such a great speech. I thought chess player? He must be a serious type. What will he talk about? But amazingly his speech was great!

He talks about strategic thinking. As the youth of today we need a constant change, and always create something new (innovate). Strategic planning is important --> plan and analyze. Knowledge and experience is not enough.

There’s changes from the past until now. Wright bros -> Boeing, Wang lab -> Toshiba, Altavista -> Google, Rio MP3 -> Ipod. To survive we must evolve. Changes are taking risk. 0% risk is impossible. What is happening today is a catastrophe of debt, status quo. The changes have slown dramatically. Most of the innovations are made before 1970. Vertical innovation means growth, while horizontal innovation means dead.

Vertical -> Creation, New, Experimental, Risky, Growth, Jobs

Horizontal -> Incremental, Existing, Imitation, Safe, Debt, Revenue

Vertical innovation is what drives the world.

Mark Twain said, ‘The average man is proud to be “consistent”, unchanging, immovable, and fossilize, where it should be his humiliation’.

Mr. Kasparov also talks about tactics and strategies. They are two different things. Tactics is an adjustment and reaction of something, no goals. Meanwhile in strategies there is a goal. It is knowing what to do when there is nothing. Without intuition we’re only spectators. The man who knows ‘Why’, will always be one’s boss. We have to ask why all the time. Everybody can be great. You just need to prepare something before they needed it. Things moves too quickly nowadays. Our goal now is to innovate.

‘Recognize your strength and improve your weakness.’

* Donald Trump – do I really need to explain this man?

He didn’t attend the summit physically, but we’re interacting live with him via satellite. I love technology! Mr. Trump talks about success. The meaning of success never change, was it 100 years ago or the next 100 years. It’s a simple word with complex meaning. The tip is never quit.

A quitter will never be successful

Also don’t trust everybody. Pick the best people to trust. If somebody screw you, screw them back. His tips to be success are:

Stay focus at all time
Believe in yourself
Able to handle pressure
Master your subject

Not everybody got good instinct. If you don’t have that instinct, it’s alright. Just work for somebody and you’ll be great. Talking about second chances, if they're good and smart it's OK. But if they cheated on you, most likely they will do the same thing again.

People don’t change that much

Work ethic is very important for entrepreneurs. To be leader we must do our job properly. People will respect you if you do something properly.

* Randi Zuckerberg – Director of market development at Facebook

Randi is a very humble person. She’s such a great person and always smiles to us. The talk of Facebook is basically about the Facebook itself. Who doesn’t have Facebook? The Chinese maybe. But her team never stops trying to bring Facebook to China.

In social networking action it very crucial. She has led the company’s US election and international politics strategy, as well as pioneered several large media partnerships. Many social movements from the youth start in Facebook. Social networking impact is so big. About Twitter, she said it’s not a competition. She even got a Twitter account.

As long as it’s spreading positive news and making the world
more positive, it’s a terrific action.

There’s one story about a burglar in the US who log in to Facebook in the victims house and forget to log out. Bummer! The house owner just looked into his profile and the burglar easily got caught. Or about a young girl who is trapped in a collapse house and people can find her just because she updated her Facebook status from her mobile.

* David Magliano – Director of Marketing for London 2012 Olympics

Many might not know him, but he is the one who brought London to become the Olympic host in 2012. He talks on how he engages young people to get ‘London 2012’. London submits the entry last minute. The final 5 city is Paris, Moscow, New York, London, and Rio. Paris and London was the last two.

We get to see all of the city’s 30 second video. Lucky us! All four cities brought its cityscape while London’s video is about the youth in the entire world who wants to take part on the Olympics. It has nothing to do with London.

* Long Yangtu (China’s former Vice Minister of Trade) and Yashwant Sinha (Former Finance Minister of India)

This session is a round table discussion which was moderated by Lorraine Hahn. Talking about China and India economics. How China became that big in economics.

* Tony Fernandes – founder of Air Asia

This is Malaysia’s own. The Malaysians are very proud of him. Standing ovation for him as he entered the stage. Two people got tickets to London just by running to the stage wearing anything red. Envy you!!!! I really enjoy his speech. He is such a humble and down to earth person.

How Tony get into this business? Actually he was in the music business for so long, and he starting to have thoughts about quitting his job. He was working in NY and and couple of countries in Europe. Flying to Europe countries back and forth get him to know there are so many budget airlines in Europe. And he thought he can bring this business back home. It wasn’t easy. But he is not afraid to fail.

Don't be afraid to fail. The failure is not to try.

Why Air Asia fly to Bandung? There is no airline fly there. But Air Asia dares to fly there. Aceh? After the tsunami he thinks we have to do something there. So Air Asia opens new route to Aceh. Bali? After bombing many people are afraid to go there, but Air Asia still opens their route to promote Bali even more.

Do you know there is Miss Thailand flying for Air Asia Thailand? Yes. Tony met this girl and she said she wanted to be a pilot. She took the test and now flying for Air Asia Thailand. There are a total of 35 female pilots in Air Asia.

Tony said, ‘You can’t be a great leader, if you don’t go to the ground.’ Tony likes to be in his employees shoes for every each other time.

Don’t look for protection

In the end of his speech he said: ‘One day I’ll buy Singapore Airlines!’ We’ll be waiting Tony! :D

* Nando Parrado – Andes plane crash survivor

It’s the last speaker for the summit. And he did a great closing. He shares his very touching story about his plane crash in the Andes Mountain, that took his mother, sister, and friend’s life.

He showed us slides of pictures about the plane crash. 72 days in the mountain with no food, no drink, no clothes. How did he survive? It was 37 years ago, when he was just 19. He came home from being rescued, his father is only family left. His father said to him; go on do anything that you want with your life. You have had experienced the worst.

When something goes wrong with you life, the universe just doesn’t care

Not everybody have access to success, but go forward. The mistake is saying later. You never know when is too late.

In the end he showed a clip about his family and it really droves me into tears. He is now living happily with his wife and two kids. Continuing his father business and giving speech to all over the world about his experience.

Well, that’s what I get from YES2009. I learn new things. All the speakers were great on sharing their story. Now is time for us, youth, to give something to make the world a better place. Oh, and btw YES2010 is plan to be held in Indonesia. Hope I can go there again.

Have you heard about Indonesia Youth Conference 2010 ?

I just heard about it :p. I think this is a very good forum for the youth of our nation. I've once participate in a similar summit, called Youth Engagement Summit (YES) 2009 in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It's such an amazing experience to meet all the great people of today. Broaden my mind and realize we, as the youth of now, are responsible for our future. I'll re post my writing on it in this blog.

About IYC

What?

IYC is an activity made and held by the youth that have an aim to gather all the youngsters from all over Indonesia to discuss problems and idea about today's issue and make our voices get attention and be heard.

Why?

More than one third of Indonesia population is youth between 18 - 30 years old. Our voices are significant to be heard.

When?

Forum discussion will be held 1st - 3rd July 2010 in Kemang, and the festival will be held on 4th July 2010 in Komunitas Salihara, Pasar Minggu, Jakarta.

I'm not involved of this activity but I truly support this. More about IYC just visit their website.

Well, i'm not sure if i'm going to enjoy backpacking my whole life :p. When i'm old and retired, it would be nice to indulged myself (with my husband of course) with sailing around Indonesia. Just found out about Silolona. A chartered boat that sails in the waters of East Indonesia and East Malaysia and Thailand with only a maximum of 10 guest per trip. Your private cruise, how cool is that?

Silolona boat is a traditional wooden sailboat, a Pinisi, built by hand by the Sulawesi Konjo people in 2004. Pinisi is a traditional Indonesian boat which mainly built by the Konjo of South Sulawesi but was and is largely used by the Bugis and Makassar.

This heavenly trip cost from 1,250 USD per day/ person or 13,500 USD per day for the whole boat *whoot*whoot* Okay, enough said, i have to stop dreaming a go back to work,,, work work work,, 'til i get approx. 95,000 USD so I can enjoy 1 whole week traveling around the sea :))

Maybe (hopefully) i'll go there when i'm 64 :)

So what's the 225,000,000 IDR all about?

Well, it's actually the amount of money that has been raised last Sunday (01/05) on a charity dinner event. The event is called 'Persembahan Cinta', held at IICC (IPB International Convention Center) Botani Square, Bogor. It's quite a big event, the mayor and IPB rector was there. I was there doing the documentation.

The event aims to raise money for special needs children. The fund will be distributed to all special needs school in Bogor. The guests were entertained with groups of disabled children performing angklung & traditional dance. And also Siska, a blind child, sings solo :). I almost cried during her singing. Yana Julio & Vina Panduwinata, famous Indonesian singers, also entertained the audience. Vina auctioned one of her song, and got 50 million rupiah out of it. With all the donation, at the end of the show they reached 225 million something rupiah (forget the detail). Wow! Look how easy it is to help each other. They are a part of our society too... every little help from us means a lot for others in need. :) I hope it doesn't stop here...

Backpacking, where next?

I always love traveling. Who doesn't? I'm very lucky to have a family who loves traveling too. Well I guess that's why I got into traveling. Since I work, I try to travel with my own money. Last year I went backpacking to Bangkok, Singapore, & Bali. Enough to make me bankrupt yet happy at the same time. :))

This year I'm trying out the Stuned (The Netherlands) scholarship. Hoping that I can get the scholarship so I can travel to Europe. If I don't succeed, I'm still trying out for ADS (Australia) and also plan to go backpacking to Vietnam & Laos.

I never been to Vietnam & Cambodia, but have heard stories about those two countries from my friends. With the budget airline and cheap accommodations, I think it's perfect for my next travel destination. I want to try couchsurfing also. I have couch for traveler in my house and met others couchsurfers in Bogor, but never tried couchsurfing in another country. I think it would be fun meeting new people & also get free accommodation!:D

Anyone have travel to those two countries? Please give me suggestions and tips on what to go and to see there? Don't know when I will go there yet, but it's okay to try to arrange itinerary, right? Please give me suggestions!

What will the world be without electricity? Electricity is our everyday needs. From the moment we woke up until the moment we fall asleep we can't get our self off electricity. Have you ever imagine our house without light at night? Streetlights, office lights, big billboard all need lights. Electricity is very crucial to are life. Guess we have to thank Mr. Thomas Alva Edison for his great invention of light bulb.

But what else comes in mind speaking of light bulb? My thought is Philips. Philips is one of the largest electronics company in the world. And it's from The Netherlands. Philips not only produce light bulbs, but they're famous for the light bulbs.

A glimpse of Philips' history
The growing demands of lights bulbs leads the company birth. Philips & Co. was established in 1891 in Eindhoven by Gerard Philips. It started with light bulbs and electro-technical equipment, but as times go by Philips started to produce other products, such as valves and razor. Some changes of Philips fonts was made and in the late 1920's the Philips name that we recognize today was formed. The famous waves and stars logo was created in 1926. Waves represent radio waves, and the stars symbolized the ether of the evening sky through which the radio waves would travel.In 1995 Philips comes out with a tag line "Let's make things better", this was the first campaign that bought the whole company together. Philips enter the Indonesian market since 1920s and it is the biggest light bulb producer in Indonesia ever since. Villagers attending seminar on energy saver lighting

Being a big company in Indonesia, Philips never forgets to give back. Philips' CSR program in Indonesia is moving village's people to use energy saver lamp with a campaign called "Kampung Terang Hemat Energy". This program was held last year in 50 villages in Indonesia. Philips gave away 55,000 energy saver lamps for free. Villagers not only given the lamps, but also given a seminar about energy saving. With energy saver lamps, it decreases their electricity bill and also help the government save electrical power. With decent lights at night, villagers can still do their activity when it's already dark, whether it's doing social activity, studying, doing homework, or else. It sure help their everyday life. Philips has a commitment to their customer, worker, and environment. I think this is what makes one's brand will always be great and big.

Having said that, we can see technology, environment, and social development go hand in hand. Villagers broaden their mind about using efficient energy that hopefully will lead them to improve their living standards. Social aspects give a big influence to the growth of area. Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies in The Netherlands is the place to study more about the land development, environment management, and the social development. I hope I will have the opportunity to study there soon. :)

This may seem stupid, but I'm really sad because my umbrella is broken. :'( My favorite green umbrella. I really love my umbrella, mostly because of the color. I loooveee green. Also it's slim and durable. I've had it almost 4 years. If you're living in Bogor, umbrella is your best friend!

I google it up and found Samsonite still sell this model and color, but not available in Indonesia:(. Yes, I want my new umbrella just like my old one! Samsonite Flat Pack Umbrella in Lime color, 16.95 USD. Anyone wanna help buying it for me? Or even better, give me for present ;p

Went to Kings of Convenience (KOC) concert last Sunday in Ritz Carlton Ballroom, Pacific Place Jakarta. It was awesome!! I missed their show back in 2006, and was very happy to see them live on stage. Actually I thought they would be a serious musician with their guitar, but they turned out to be an entertaining performers. Erlend was very talkative during the concert, Eirik is the quite one. He was sick though. They made a jam session with TWSTCC drummer and bassist. Erlend even sang one of TWSTCC song! Yes, in Bahasa.

I always been a big fan of KOC. Two guys with a guitar, sometimes piano. How could they brought such a beautiful music. Yes, I envy their guitar skills. LOL. Listening to their records was very relaxing, seeing them performan live hypnotized me! I just think that 1.5 hour concert was too short. :(

KOC is an indie folk-pop duo from Bergen, Norway. Consisting of Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe, the musical group is known for their delicate tunes, calming voices, and intricate and subtle guitar melodies. They both compose and sing the song.

Btw before KOC, there are Hollywood Nobody and The White Shoes & The Couples Company. Great Indonesian band. I love TWSTCC's new song! You should check on Youtube! :D There is also Jens Lekman, a Swedish Indie Pop musician. Didn't know his song so much. But overall was good.

Come again KOC! Def gonna watch again!

PS. Just found out after the concert, Erlend went out to have some chat with the crowd. Too bad I rushed back home! :((

Last week (26-28th March 2010), there was Indonesia's 1st Hot Air Balloon Adventure in Sentul City, West Java. I went there on the first day right after work, but no good. It rains not long after I got there. So I drove back home. :( The next day, me and Sofie was already at the venue at 7 AM. Try to catch the first balloon lift-off. And we finally saw the colorful balloons in the sunny blue sky!

Well, I don't think Bogor weather is good for hot air ballooning. There were 2 lift-off scheduled for a day, 6- 9Am and 4-8PM, but the second schedule was dismiss because of the weather. So the best time to see the balloon is in the morning. Luckily my house is only 10 minutes from the venue. I went there again Sunday morning with my cousins.

Never saw hot air balloons IRL before, so it was my first experience. Too bad it's too expensive to ride one. About 550 USD. -____-

Have you heard about Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is WWF climate change global campaign which aims individuals, businesses, and government to turn their lights off to make their stand against climate change. It started in Sydney 2007, and since then it had been a global event with more than 50 million people in 35 countries participating. In 2010, Earth Hour is aiming 1 billion people in 1000 cities in the world. By switching off the lights, we save the electricity consumption.

Earth Hour 2010 will takes place on Saturday, 27 March at 8.30pm (local time). Everyone are encourage to take part. It's one simple way to take responsibility, to get involved, and to lead the way towards a sustainable future.

Live in Chino

Any idea what is chino? Chino is a kind of twill fabric, usually made primarily from cotton. Mostly people consider it as khaki. But it's actually two different cloth. Just google 'em up and you'll get the idea :D

Sweet Escape

I told you I was in Terminal 3, but didn't tell you where am I going. Well I went to Bali to visit my bf & meet up with my friend from Japan. She had a 5 days off from work, so decided to go to Bali. It's her first time to there. So I take her around in just only 3 days.

I came to Bali a day ahead of Misaki. I stayed 1 night at Tune Hotel, Double Six. It's a new hotel, from Air Asia. It cost me less than 200.000 IDR. It's great hotel for flashpacker. But the check out time is too early, 10 AM. After Misaki & my sister came, we stayed at Taman Ayu Legian in Legian Street. Legian is the most crowded street in Kuta area. There are lots of clubs, bar, cafes, cheap hotels. I was searching to find a cheaper hotel in Poppies Lane, but my eventually we end up staying here for 3 nights. We got 375.000 IDR/ night. I also rented a car for 4 days with a total of 525.000 IDR.

First stop: Dreamland in Pecatu. I'm not quite fond of it. I thought it was a quite and clean beach. But once you've got arrived, you'll see a lot of tourists buses, people selling arts, and it's dirty. You have to walk along the shore a little bit, to get the clean and quite beach. Now there is a new club/ restaurant, Klapa. Quite expensive though. We stayed until sunrise then head back down to grab a dinner at Pepenero.

The next day, we had lunch in Warung Made. Try their specialties; Nasi Campur Bali. Love it! After that drove back uphill to Garuda Wisnu Kencana, it's a cultural park with the big statue of Wisnu. We watch Kecak Dance in the open air amphitheater, but unfortunately it rained in the middle of the show. So they have to stop. As the night was getting dark we drove back to the hotel to take a rest. At night me & Misaki walk along Legian - Kuta Beach Street. Get some taste of the night life and ended up sitting in Kuta Beach. Just relaxing and hearing the sound of the sea.

As for the day after it, it was water sport time. We headed to Tanjung Benoa. You have to haggle on the price, because they usually overcharge it. We get a good deal for banana boat, donut, para sailing, snorkeling, and Turtle Island tour. Soooo exciting! Especially the donut thingy. It was a real bumpy ride. And I was thrown into the water hardly. LOL.... Enough with the water sports, we then had lunch in Bebek Bengil (Dirty Duck Diner), Ubud. A long 1 hour drive to this place. But it's worth it! It's very very delicious. Crispy fried duck served with vegetables and traditional sambal. Yummy! It's 68.000 IDR for a set of meal. Expensive? I rather said it's worth the price. It's 4 PM and we still can chase the sunset at Tanah Lot. So we drove there. Tanah Lot is one of the famous temple in Bali. The temple sits on a large offshore rock. Too bad dark clouds covers the sunset. If not we can see the most beautiful sunset ever. We decided to head back to Kuta, grab some lunch and go back to the hotel. It was raining hard to we can't walk along Legian. We just played pool in the hotel and after the rain stops we tried to find some clubs. Better just take a walk than drive a car in Legian, the traffic is crahzey... We were wasting 1 hour in the traffic jam, then decided to parked the car and walk to the club. We went to Sky Garden, I think it's rather new than other clubs in Legian. Hang out until 4 AM then have a breakfast with a British man we met at the club.

It's our last day at Bali! I just had a couple hours of sleep then packed my backpack. I'm ready to leave...NOT.

A Glimpse onTerminal 3

I just experienced the new terminal in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Terminal 3. It was actually opened since April 15th, 2009. But just had a chance to go there last January. Wow I'm amazed. If you know Jakarta's public facilities, Terminal 3 is not even close to that. It's very clean (and yes, including the toilet), all taxis are official from the airport, no ticket scalper, I can say it's safe. Hope all the public facilities in Jakarta can be like this one :D

What's cooking good looking?

This is not a trick, I really baked the cake! No magic at all, except for the instant Pavlova Magic. I skip the let's-make-pavlova-from scratch. Been longing for pavlova ever since I moved back here. Hmm...let me count....10, 11, 12, ... oh well we don't need to count, don't we? ;) Good news my friend was gonna moved back for good, so I told her to buy me some Pavlova Magic. She didn't even know there's such thing as Pavlova Magic!

Pavlova is a meringue-based dessert named after Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova. It's very famous in Australia, but not in here.

Well, since I made it the instant way, so I literally just mixed the instant powder and hot water using an electric mixer. Important tips: use extra-clean utensils! The success of meringue depends on it. After mixed, place the dough in a pyrex by spatula. Make it high in the middle, just like a mountain. Bake it for about 1 hour, turn off the oven but don't open the oven door, let it cool completely, than take it out. Place the whip cream on in the top surface, and decorate it with fruits (usually kiwis).

Voila! Pavlova is ready to be eaten! :D

Cap Go Meh 2010, it's a Parade!

Last Sunday (28/02) I went to the Cap Go Meh Bogor Street Festival 2010 with my friends. There were like 13 of us, but I was lost in the middle of the parade, so I carry on alone. LOL... This was my 3rd time. It was a huge annual parade, not only for the Chinese ethnic but all of the Bogor citizen. Suryakencana - Sukasari Street was flooded by human. Although it started out with rain and thunder, but it didn't stop the parade. The Chinese believe rain brings good luck!
